Although deceased, James (Jim) Larkin is a man that stands out in history. He is one individual that the world has missed for the past seven decades, having died in 1947. During his lifetime, Jim was able to cause a positive impact on the lives of many people.
As a labor organizer, Larkin facilitated the establishment of the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union (ITGWU). Throughout his lifetime, James Larkin loved to travel, moving from Liverpool, through the United States of America to Ireland. It is during Larkin’s exploits that he was able to gain new ideas after meeting people with diverse backgrounds.
Shortly after the inception of ITGWU, it became the biggest union in Ireland at the time. Later on, Jim Larkin created several labor organizations, mainly because he was a dedicated Marxist. Advocating for the rights of workers, Jim was able to bring tremendous change using his strategic approach. The organization grew from having 5000 members to hosting 15000 significant contributors.
Unlike any other individual in the 19th century, Jim had little to no education. As a way of supporting his family, Jim Larkin took up many odd jobs just to put a meal on the table.
However, his poor background never deterred Jim from achieving his ambitions. Jim’s socialist tendencies encouraged him to fight for the rights and freedoms of workers, and that is the main reason why Mr. Larkin joined the National Union of Dock Labourers.
As a great socialist leader, he was able to see to it that workers get fair remunerations and treatment. It is during Jim Larkin’s time that more Irish workers got unionized. Jim also introduced the idea of an umbrella body to offer support to unionized employees. Apart from fighting employment injustices, Jim always had a foul mouth about the atrocities of World War I.
To this end, Larkin rallied behind the Americans to fight against the Britons. Jim diversified into editing, art, and culture. At the time, it got hardly known that Larkin was a man who could put pen to paper but after the release of ‘the Irish Worker’, another side of Jim got revealed.
After moving to the U.S., Jim adopted yet another hobby, that of being a public speaker. It is during Larkin’s travels in the United States that he was able to meet new people especially in the Socialist Party of New York.
Feeling inspired, Jim did not hesitate in transforming the Socialist party to a communist one. Today, Jim Larkin is renowned as the labor champion of Ireland. As an individual born from a rather humbling background, Jim Larkin emerged to be an unbreakable force particularly in the advocacy of trade unionist rights.
Jim placed his trust in the notion that every laborer was to get fairly reimbursed after a good day of work, a principle that gets echoed to date. Although Jim Larkin was only on this earth for a short while, he helped create the blueprints on which current trade unions use as templates.
